Chiellini calls for signings

Chiellini calls for signings
Thursday 31 July, 2008

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has spoken out in favour of the Bianconeri returning to the market.

President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has stressed that the Old Lady have done their business for the summer, but there are constant Press rumours linking them with star names.

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso had been expected to arrive before the purchase of Christian Poulsen and Chiellini thinks it would be a sound investment.

“There are no doubts over Alonso,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “He is a great player who could help us.

“There could be others like him but I’m sure that the club will bring in another great champion to allow us to make the leap of class needed to fight Milan, Inter and Roma.”

A possible move for Inter’s Dejan Stankovic was derailed by protests from the Juve fans.

“It’s only natural that Dejan, having played for Inter for so many years, wouldn’t be welcomed that warmly at first, but players like him know how to win over fans,” Chiellini insisted.

“I don’t know what the club will decide to do, but I know that if Stankovic arrived he would undo all the ill feeling he amassed with the Juve fans while playing for the Nerazzurri.”

Finally, Chiellini discussed the possibility of a move for Alberto Aquilani, who is currently considering a new contract offer from Roma.

“We have played together for the national side since we were 15 and our parents are close friends,” he explained.

“We speak a lot and I have always told him to come to Turin, but he has to make his decision and he is obviously very attached to Roma, having grown up there.”

Amauri aims to shine in England

Amauri aims to shine in England
Thursday 31 July, 2008

The Juventus squad has landed at Luton Airport and Amauri is keen to make a case for a starting shirt during the Old Lady’s next three games.

Juve have arrived in England to take on Arsenal and Hamburg in the Emirates Cup before facing Manchester United.

For Amauri, who signed from Palermo at the start of the summer, it is a great chance to impress Coach Claudio Ranieri.

“Being here at Juventus is the opportunity of a lifetime,” he declared. I will try and make the most of it and always give my best.

“I like the competition for places and it motivates me. I think it can help all of us strikers.

“With the quality that we have up front we will have to do everything we can to make the most of the chances we get.

“I have found so many champions here and I think that it will be easier to win with such a strong squad.

“These three friendlies in England will be important to get playing minutes ahead of our main goal – the Champions League preliminaries.”

Amauri’s involvement in the Trofeo TIM was limited as he had to leave the pitch through injury after just 20 minutes of the game against Inter.

“I really wanted to play, but sadly a small injury to my eyebrow forced me to come off early,” the former Chievo man explained.

“It’s a real shame and I was angry but luckily it wasn’t anything serious and I am ready to play again.”

The Emirates Cup takes place this Saturday and Sunday with the Bianconeri facing Arsenal on Saturday at 4.30pm and Hamburg on Sunday at 2pm.

Tiago vacates Turin home

Tiago vacates Turin home
Thursday 31 July, 2008

Juventus midfield outcast Tiago Mendes could be set for an immediate exit after he moved out of his house in Turin.

The Portuguese international suffered a miserable first season in Serie A despite arriving from Lyon with high hopes.

And he hasn’t made the grade in pre-season, missing a penalty in the Trofeo TIM against Milan.

Coach Claudio Ranieri has hinted that Tiago could be on his way and admits that he has been a flop.

“All over Europe he is considered to be a great player,” the Juve boss said. “But calcio throws up some strange mysteries.

“There are flops in Italian football and sometimes it seems to make no sense. But there are lots of fans who want me to continue with Tiago.”

Tiago has reportedly cancelled the lease on his house in Turin and is in a hotel while his family have returned to Portugal.

The 27-year-old’s next destination is still unclear but he has been linked to Benfica in recent weeks.

Iaquinta: «We can challenge anyone»

Iaquinta: «We can challenge anyone»

Now that he's started, Vincenzo Iaquinta just keeps scoring: one goal against Brondby, two against Borussia Dortmund and another very important one against Inter Milan at the TIM Trophy tonight.

The Calabria-born striker is one of the stars of this pre-season period and has no intention of stopping. Even more so now that the crucial moment of the summer is getting nearer: «I feel very good, fortunately my injuries are in the past now and I hope I can get to the preliminaries 100% fit. We're all doing very well up front, we're still in the preparation phase, but all four of us will be on good form when it counts. Tonight we had more confirmation that we can challenge any team».

Inter 0-1 Juventus (Trofeo TIM)

Trofeo TIM: Inter bow to Iaquinta
Tuesday 29 July, 2008

Vincenzo Iaquinta's well-taken goal allowed Juventus to defeat an anxious Inter, but there were injuries to Marco Materazzi and Amauri.

Having lost the opener on penalties to Milan, Juve had one point and changed several of the players from that first match, including new strike partners Alex Del Piero and Amauri. Jose Mourinho introduced a trident attack with Mario Balotelli and Amantino Mancini flanking the rediscovered Adriano.

There was bad news just seven minutes in, as Marco Materazzi appeared to sprain his knee and was forced off the field. Mourinho opted to throw on Dejan Stankovic, who was roundly jeered in Turin after Juve fans put a stop to his transfer with their protests, moving Esteban Cambiasso into central defence.

Cristian Molinaro outpaced Douglas Maicon down the left flank and crossed back for Mauro Camoranesi's deflected finish. Dario Knezevic did well to close down Adriano with a sliding tackle in the box.

Play was halted for a nasty clash of heads between Patrick Vieira and Amauri, the Brazilian getting the worst of it with a deep cut to his eyebrow that prompted a substitution. Young Juve talents Albin Ekdal and Fausto Rossi had dangerous shots blocked and Stankovic earned more jeers with a wayward strike.

Christian Poulsen came on for Momo Sissoko and moments later another substitute, Vincenzo Iaquinta, sprung the offside trap to trap a long ball and place a precise angled drive past Julio Cesar. It was his fourth goal of the summer so far after scoring against Brondby and a brace in the 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Poulsen's attempt was charged down after a counter and teenager Rossi tested the Inter defence with a cheeky curler towards the near post. Gigi Buffon needed his wits about him to prod a wayward Knezevic intervention off the head of Adriano at the back post.

Hernan Crespo and Luis Figo replaced Stankovic and Balotelli for a change of system with 10 minutes to go, the Portuguese winger on the right and Mancini on the left with two main strikers. Maicon seemed to be particularly out of shape and made several simple errors, earning a booking for a late tackle on Ekdal.

Giorgio Chiellini came on for Molinaro and Crespo couldn't get enough contact on his header. Julio Cesar had to palm a dangerous corner away from Camoranesi.

The save of the tournament came from Buffon with an absolutely stunning reaction stop on Adriano's towering header. Adriano then got between the two centre-backs and was sprinting towards goal, but Chiellini did well to anticipate with the aid of a possible shirt-tug from Knezevic.

It should have been 2-0 in stoppages, but Del Piero's free kick incredibly ricocheted off the inside of one upright, then the other and into the grateful arms of Julio Cesar! It didn't matter, as Juventus won 1-0. The final round of the Trofeo TIM is the Milan derby.

Juventus 2-2 Milan (Trofeo TIM)

Trofeo TIM: Seedorf double sinks Juve
Tuesday 29 July, 2008

Clarence Seedorf's brace forced a thrilling 2-2 draw in which Milan beat Juventus on penalties, so the Bianconeri now face Inter.

The Trofeo Tim is one of the traditional summer competitions in the peninsula and has Inter, Milan and Juventus going head-to-head in 45-minute encounters at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin.

Juventus were expected to do well in this tournament, as they were already at an advanced stage of pre-season training ahead of the Champions League preliminary round, but Cristiano Zanetti had a minor injury.

Kaka returned from his knee operation along with Under-19 international Alberto Paloschi, as they were the only fit strikers at the club. Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato were at the Olympics and Pippo Inzaghi and Marco Borriello sidelined. Mathieu Flamini was also out with a muscular strain.

Surprisingly, the Rossoneri were more aggressive from the start and took the lead with a cracking strike from Clarence Seedorf after seven minutes. The Dutchman took a few steps forward and unleashed a right-foot screamer from 20 metres that slotted into the top corner despite Gigi Buffon getting his fingertips to it.

The advantage lasted all of 40 seconds before David Trezeguet's equaliser. The Barcelona transfer target slid on to Marco Marchionni's cross, allowed all the time in the world by Kakha Kaladze's error.

Milan's defensive problems were evident again soon after, as a Zdenek Grygera cross from the right took a touch off Kaladze to find Marchionni's cushioned header at the back post.

It was not a vintage performance from Kaladze, who incredibly ballooned Cristian Brocchi's low cross over the bar from six yards! Buffon palmed away efforts from Paloschi and Marek Jankulovski, while Vincenzo Iaquinta's touched-on free kick and a deflected Nedved angled drive were wide.

Milan got back on level terms with just 120 seconds left on the clock, as a corner came to Seedorf, who shrugged off his marker to cannon another powerful and precise shot under the bar. That forced a penalty shoot-out to decide who would face Inter in the second match.

Trezeguet started the 'lottery' and blasted well over the bar, then Kaka coolly sent Buffon the wrong way with a low right-foot finish.

Zeljko Kalac got a hand to Iaquinta's penalty, but couldn't keep it out, while Andrea Pirlo's was just past Buffon's fingertips. Giorgio Chiellini and Jankulovski converted, but a terribly weak Tiago Mendes effort was comfortably saved. Paloschi lifted his penalty over Buffon to win 4-2 on penalties.

Juve To Swap Trez For Eto’o?

Juve To Swap Trez For Eto’o?

According to Tuttosport, Juventus are pondering whether to swap prolific striker David Trezeguet for Barcelona’s Samuel Eto’o.

Trezeguet has been heavily linked with a move to Barca all summer, and the striker is said to be high up on new coach Josep Guardiola’s summer shopping list.

Although Juve have always publicly stated that there is no chance of selling the Frenchman, the Italian press continues to report that it is not certain he will still be in Turin next season.

Trezeguet has not been at his sharpest in pre-season, and has been overshadowed so far by Amauri and Vincenzo Iaquinta, who have grabbed five goals between them in the last two matches.

The 31-year-old is said to be unsettled, and it is possible he would consider a re-union with good friend Thierry Henry, were the possibility of a move to Barcelona arise.

Tuttosport claims that an exchange deal involving Trezeguet and Samuel Eto’o is not out of the question, as Guardiola would prefer Trez to other forward alternatives Didier Drogba and Emmanuel Adebayor.

Eto’o is looking highly likely to leave Camp Nou this summer in search of a new challenge away from Spain. The Cameroon hitman, who has scored 89 goals in just 136 games during his time at Barca, would welcome a move to Italy.

Sissoko, Ekdal, Poulsen, “foreign” midfield speaks

Sissoko, Ekdal, Poulsen, “foreign” midfield speaks

In Dortmund it wasn't just the usual great day for the attack and for an ever more solid defence (once again they only let in a goal on penalty). The midfield did its part too. And if Zanetti's brilliance isn't headline news by now, the young Ekdal - who will turn 19 only tomorrow - keeps growing, as does Sissoko's physical condition. Not forgetting Poulsen, whose debut will be remembered for a long time, especially thanks to his fantastic pass on Iaquinta's second goal.

At the end of the match, these were the three foreign players' comments.

Momo Sissoko
: «We're improving in every game and that's the most important thing. Today we did very well again despite the excessive heat. I'm pleased with how my understanding with Zanetti is growing».

Albin Ekdal
: «We held out well against excellent opponents such as Borussia. Poulsen? He's a true pro and he shows it in every training session. I'm not expecting anything special for my birthday, definitely some phone calls from Sweden».

Christian Poulsen
: «I'm pleased with the ball I gave to Vincenzo. It's always a pleasure to set up a team mate so that he can score. But the thing that pleased me the most is the fact that I felt no pain to the muscle I'd injured, I'm fine now and I count on getting even fitter».

We Have The Best Strikers - Buffon

We Have The Best Strikers - Buffon

Juventus number one Gigi Buffon talked about his team's strikeforce and hopes the club don't give up on signing Alberto Aquilani from Roma.

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon thinks his team have the best group of strikers in Serie A and believes the club should insist to secure Alberto Aquilani's transfer from home-town club Roma.

"I still hope he arrives, because in my opinion in a couple of years he will be one of the best players in the world in his position," he said to Turin sports daily Tuttosport. "I think the management knows that a major economic sacrifice is needed to get him. Let's see what happens."

Buffon also reiterated that he thinks Juventus are one of the front-runners in the race for the Scudetto next season.

"Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Amauri: what other team has four such world-class strikers? I don't see any others," he continued. "Amauri has been a positive surprise for me, he's so strong he could even play by himself up front."

Incidentally, the Brazilian striker opened the score in today's friendly win against Borussia Dortmund as Juve ran out 3-1 winners.

Buffon: Aquilani's worth it Sunday

Buffon: Aquilani's worth it Sunday

Gigi Buffon believes Juventus have “the strongest strike force in Serie A” and should break the bank for Alberto Aquilani.

Roma confirmed this weekend that the Bianconeri had made enquiries after the midfielder, but that he was considered untouchable.

“I still hope he will arrive, because in my view in a couple of years he’ll become one of the best in the world in his position,” enthused the goalkeeper in Tuttosport.

“I think the administration know that Aquilani deserves a major economic push. We’ll see what happens.”

In the meantime, Buffon insists Juventus are among the favourites for the Scudetto race this season.

“Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Amauri. Tell me what other team can afford four such world class strikers. I don’t see anyone else.

“Amauri was a positive surprise for me, as he has such strength that he could even play on his own upfront.”

The Brazilian’s partnership with Trezeguet should be further experimented in today’s rescheduled friendly with Borussia Dortmund.

The game had been organised for Saturday evening, but was called off after a freak thunderstorm struck the German city.

Buffon: We Are Not Beautiful!

Buffon: We Are Not Beautiful!

Gianluigi Buffon has admitted that Juventus are not the most beautiful team to watch in Serie A, but he says that they are definitely the hardest to beat.

The Bianconeri are expected to mount a title challenge this coming season, however they have been criticised for their summer transfer campaign after signing a number of physical rather than technical players.

"Juve will never be the most beautiful team in the championship. This is for certain,” Buffon told the Corriere dello Sport.

“However, we will be the team who are the most difficult to beat. I don’t know if we will win the league, but I can assure you that we will fight hard for everything.

“None of us have forgotten what happened [with Calciopoli]. For two years we have been motivated by an incredible desire for revenge and this has often been decisive.

“Now that we are about to return to our old levels we could lose something [in terms of desire].

“That is why Juventus was reinforced in one specific direction: muscles and strength.”

Buffon then went on to stress for the umpteenth time over the past few weeks that rivals Milan are the favourites for the Scudetto, although he has promised that Juve will put up a tough fight to stop them.

"Milan were favourites for the Scudetto even without Ronaldinho. With the Brazilian, even more so,” he explained.

“The fact they are not playing in the Champions League is a great advantage for Ancelotti. But they will have us to reckon with.”

Juve's Aquilani offer rejected

Juve's Aquilani offer rejected
Sunday 27 July, 2008

Roma have announced that Alberto Aquilani is “not for sale” even though they did receive an offer from Juventus.

For several weeks Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport has reported on the Bianconeri’s interest in the midfielder, but now there is official confirmation.

“Juventus tried to enquire about him in the correct way when Giovanni Cobolli Gigli asked Rosella Sensi, but he’s not going anywhere,” revealed director of sport Daniele Pradé on Sky Italia.

“The Sensi family has made it clear Aquilani is not for sale.”

The Italian international’s contract expires in 2010 and negotiations for an extension have still not reached a conclusion.

The Giallorossi have been at the centre of another curious transfer saga this week, as Adrian Mutu had his bags packed before Fiorentina pulled the plug on an £18m move.

“Mutu was a Roma player in every way,” explained Pradé. “He had agreed economic terms with us and had also given up on an extra £800,000 of his four-year contract so we could match the price-tag proposed by Pantaleo Corvino.

“It was all confirmed, then the whole thing just collapsed.”

The decision was made to keep Mutu when President Andrea Della Valle flew in to discuss the matter with Mutu and Coach Cesare Prandelli.

Friendly: Juve dominate Dortmund
Sunday 27 July, 2008

Juventus thumped Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in their own back yard in today’s rescheduled friendly with Vincenzo Iaquinta bagging a brace.

The match was originally set to be played on Saturday evening, but was postponed after a freak thunderstorm struck the Westfalenstadion.

Despite the fact the Bundesliga starts earlier and so Borussia are at a more advanced stage of pre-season preparation, the Bianconeri dominated the match.

Pavel Nedved went close in the opening seconds and five minutes in Amauri had been left unmarked to tap in Zdenek Grygera’s cross.

There were scoring opportunities for David Trezeguet, Nedved and Momo Sissoko, while Gianluigi Buffon was only really tested by Kuba’s snapshot.

Iaquinta and Alessandro Del Piero replaced Amauri and Trezeguet for the second half and the former Udinese hitman almost netted with his first touch, a goalline clearance denying his lob.

It was only postponed by a few minutes before Iaquinta comfortably got his head to a Nedved cross.

Del Piero threaded through for another Iaquinta opportunity and the third goal was created by summer signing Christian Poulsen’s long ball forward for a Iaquinta chip.

Borussia only managed to hit the back of the net from the penalty spot with Kruska.

Buffon (Chimenti), Grygera (Zebina), Mellberg (Legrottaglie), Chiellini (Knezevic), Molinaro (Salihamidzic), Camoranesi (Marchionni), Sissoko (Ekdal), Zanetti (Poulsen), Nedved (Rossi), Amauri (Del Piero), Trezeguet (Iaquinta)

Ranieri: «A tough test against Borussia»

Ranieri: «A tough test against Borussia»

«Borussia are already League-fit. I watched the game they won against Bayern: they were like possessed, they sprinted, they pressed... They're ready for the League, whereas we're still preparing. It'll be a good test». This is how Ranieri introduced the game against Borussia Dortmund; the Bianconeri's upcoming opponents have just won the German Super Cup and they're a particularly tough team at this stage, as Juve still need to find their rhythm: «You only get it by playing –Ranieri explained – these games are important to “amass minutes”. I saw a good Juve in Copenhagen. After ten minutes we loosened up and we tried to play those combinations that allowed us to do well last year. Sure, there were a few mistakes, but in any case I saw a solid team. We'll need the same solidity in Germany».

Talk then switched to single players. First of all Sissoko: «He was supposed to recover just in time for our trip to England, and I'm already playing him. We mustn't rush, though; he's young, he wants to show how good he is and even in training I often have to hold him back».

On Mellberg: «I liked him a lot. You can see he's an experienced defender, solid, good with his head... it's difficult to go past him».

And then Amauri: «He's doing well, but he's not fit yet, just like the others. In any case I wasn't expecting him to start off like this».

And finally, Ekdal: «He has a lot of personality despite his 19 years of age. Are we going to send him somewhere on loan? I don't know. I will tell the Club what I think we should do at the end of the pre-season training, and then they will decide».

Trezeguet deserves a chapter all for himself, as the papers in the last few days have been saying he's not happy, creating a bit of controversy. Ranieri was inevitably asked about it, and he answered sarcastically, making it clear where the truth lies: «Do we have a Trezeguet problem? Please bear with me, but I can't answer these types of questions. I talk about football».

Finally, the Manager clarified the young players’ situation and the Club's plans: «At Juventus they ask you to win and to make the young players debut at the same time, whereas they go to the other clubs to grow. It's normal. It'll be up to them to fight for a place in the team now, knowing that they have a Manager who has no preclusion towards them and isn't scared of making them play».

Ranieri denies Trez tantrum

Ranieri denies Trez tantrum
Saturday 26 July, 2008 (chan4)

Claudio Ranieri dashed talk of a David Trezeguet crisis at Juventus by claiming he has already forged a solid partnership with Amauri.

“David is not disappointed,” insisted the Coach after media speculation following a 2-1 friendly win over Brondby.

“People are creating a storm in a teacup over the fact he was angry that he had a perfectly good goal ruled offside. He was cross about that and not any competition with Amauri.

“In fact, I am convinced these two can play together. They have already found the right movement to co-exist on the pitch.”

The unusual pairing will get another airing tonight when Juve continue their summer tour of Europe by taking on Borussia Dortmund in a friendly.

“Against Brondby we relaxed after 10 minutes and started to combine beautifully. We’ll need to be compact against Borussia, as I saw them defeat Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup this month. They are already on form and we are just starting, so it’ll be a good test.

“Amauri is not in perfect shape yet, as it will take a few days,” continued Ranieri.

“I expected him to do exactly what he has done so far. I also liked Olof Mellberg, as you can tell he is experienced, solid, practical, determined, strong in the air and difficult to get past in a one-on-one.”

Mellberg was one of only several new signings, as the transfer campaign has not impressed a section of the fans.

“There is no point trying to hang the paintings on the walls when the building is still under construction,” added the tactician with one of his trademark metaphors.

“Last season we laid the foundations, now we have to put up the walls. Every team takes what it needs and that is what we did.”

Alex earns Scirea award

Alex earns Scirea award
Friday 25 July, 2008

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero has won the 2008 Gaetano Scirea award by a landslide margin.

The prize is handed out each year to the player who journalists believe serves as an example for how to behave on and off the field.

Last year Milan striker Pippo Inzaghi won the 16th edition of the award, which takes its name from one of the greatest Italian players of all-time.

As well as being one of five players to win every national and international trophy recognised by FIFA, Juventus legend Scirea was renowned for his sportsmanship and dignity.

Del Piero received 281 votes for this year’s title, leaving him easily clear of Roma’s Christian Panucci on 35.

Veteran striker Vincenzo Montella and fiery Inter stopper Marco Materazzi received just 19 votes each.

Trez To Cut And Run To Barcelona Because Of Amauri?

Trez To Cut And Run To Barcelona Because Of Amauri?

Juventus striker David Trezeguet is considering a move to Barcelona according to Sportmediaset who claim the Frenchman is not looking forward to living under Amauri's shadow.

Barcelona have been keen on Trezegol all summer and Amauri's arrival from Palermo led to speculation that the Frenchman's days in Turin were numbered.

Both the striker and his club have always denied that he was on the verge of leaving but reports in Italy suggest that a move to Spain is now imminent for the prolific Bianconero.

Sportmediaset claims that Trezeguet is unhappy with all the attention and limelight being focussed on Amauri. This has been made even worse after the striker was left on the bench for the friendly against Brondby which the Old Lady won 2-1.

Claudio Ranieri opted to go for Amauri - Iaquinta up front, leading to questions being asked as to whether Trezeguet will be able to play alongside the Brazilian given their similar characteristics.

Trezegol is believed to have been furious after being left out of the starting XI and it seems as if he will consider any offers coming from Camp Nou.

Juventus have invested heavily during the summer transfer campaign and the club are keen on bringing in a top midfielder to the side but, in order to do so, they would need to raise funds from the sale of one of their own players and this could be Trezeguet as Barcelona are willing to spend €25m on the striker.

Juve Still Hoping To Sign Stankovic

Juve Still Hoping To Sign Stankovic

According to reports in Italy, Juventus are still hoping to sign Dejan Stankovic before the end of next month’s transfer window.

The Bianconeri have stated that, following the capture of Sevilla’s Christian Poulsen, they will be signing no further players this summer, with the exception of a reserve goalkeeper.

Juve have been searching for a midfielder for most of pre-season, and one of the options they had been pursuing was Inter’s Dejan Stankovic.

Negotiations were reported to have been at advanced stages, however, following a protest by Bianconeri supporters the transfer was not completed.

Juve subsequently bought Poulsen to fill their void in midfield, and it seemed as if any chance of Stankovic ending up in Turin had vanquished.

However, sections of the Italian press believe that the Old Lady are still hopeful of acquiring the 30-year-old, who is not believed to be in the first team plans of Inter coach Jose Mourinho.

Juve director Jean-Claude Blanc earlier this week failed to completely rule out signing Stankovic.

"I think the team is closed," he stated.

"But if there was a chance, then Stankovic could play behind the strikers, in a midfield diamond, or act as cover for Pavel Nedved."

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has hailed the Bianconeri’s array of young stars and he believes they will all show their mettle and become great footballers.

The Old Lady has always tried to ensure that a mixture of both youth and experience graced the side and this season the team has a number of young stars all keen on showing their worth.

Paolo De Ceglie, Sebastian Giovinco, Claudio Marchisio and Albin Ekdal are all hungry to show Claudio Ranieri what they can do and Buffon is sure all the youngsters will do well this term.

“Age doesn’t matter, I would know as I made my debut when I was just 17,” Buffon told La Gazzetta Dello Sport.

“The youngsters look good in training but then you have to see what they are capable of during a game.

“Our players have great qualities, De Ceglie, Giovinco, Marchisio are players we all knew about and now we are also discovering the qualities behind Ekdal.”

Club president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has always claimed the way forward was to focus on youth and it seems as if the chief is keeping his word.

The Bianconeri will be hoping their stars shine as they attempt to challenge for both the Scudetto and Champions League next season.

Amauri: Ronaldinho Doesn't Frighten Me!

Amauri: Ronaldinho Doesn't Frighten Me!

Juventus striker Amauri is confident that he will finally achieve tangible success with his new club, and insists that the prospect of facing Ronaldinho does not frighten him.

Amauri insists that he is adapting well to life at Juve, and is working hard on forging links with his new striking colleagues, Alex Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Vincenzo Iaquinta. The ex-Palermo hit-man claims that there is a healthy rivalry among the forwards, but they are all determined to move the club forward.

He told Corriere dello Sport: “It’s new to me but I have already adapted. It’s not important who plays, it’s important to maintain Juve’s high levels."

The Brazilian will come face-to-face with his compatriot Ronaldinho next season; the ex-Barcelona superstar has signed with Milan. However, Amauri is not daunted by the prospect of squaring up to Ronaldinho and insists that the threat to Juventus’ ambitions will come from elsewhere.

He continued: “Ronaldinho doesn’t frighten me. Milan are strong, lots of people say that they are stronger than us but I am convinced that it’s not like that. There is also Inter and Roma to consider."

Amauri is optimistic that he will land trophies with his new club. Juve officials convinced the 26-year-old that success would finally come his way after a hitherto barren career in Italy. He also revealed that the Juve tifosi are expecting success this year.

He said: “I’ve never won anything in my life and I wanted to come to Juve because they convinced me that I would be playing in a team that would finally win something. I don’t want to tempt fate, but the feeling I get from the supporters is that this year we will win something. Scudetto or Champions League? I don’t know.”

Squad at full-ranks preparing for Dortmund

Squad at full-ranks preparing for Dortmund

After overcoming the Danish hurdle, with a 2-1 win against Brondby, Juventus will face a German one now. There's another international test of Juve's strength on Saturday, when Ranieri's men will travel to Dortmund to play Borussia in a friendly.

A test that looks set to be even tougher than the one in Copenhagen. Indeed the German side, which includes former Juve player Robert Kovac, have just won a prestigious trophy that has galvanized the whole squad. Last night, at the same time as Nedved and team mates were beating Brondby, the Germans celebrated a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in the German Super Cup final.

The team got back to work at the Juventus Center today to prepare the upcoming match. The players back from Denmark joined with the ones who stayed home and trained together in an afternoon session.

Giovinco Threatens To Leave Juve For Arsenal?

Giovinco Threatens To Leave Juve For Arsenal?

The agent of Sebastian Giovinco has hinted that his client may decide to quit Juventus unless he is paid what he deserves.

Giovinco is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents, and the future of Juventus.

However some problems have begun to emerge between the 21-year-old and the Bianconeri with regards to a new contract. Giovinco is demanding an improved pay package, but so far the club are only willing to pay the fantasista a relatively low €500,000 per year.

There have been reports in the press over the past week or so that a number of Premiership sides are ready to take advantage of the situation, with Arsenal particularly linked with the ‘Atomic Ant’.

Giovinco’s agent has now made it perfectly clear that, while his client does not want to leave to join a team like Arsenal, he may have to reconsider unless he is paid what he deserves.

"If an offer was to arrive from Arsenal, or from abroad, we would block the bid,” explained Claudio Pasqualin.

“However, Juventus certainly must be fairer in the evaluation of their players.

“At the moment they are not. Giovinco may be young but he must be paid what he deserves.”

Juventus fans earlier this week launched a protest against selling Giovinco following reports in the press about a possible swap deal with Arsenal involving Robin Van Persie.

Barca Set For New €25m Trezeguet Bid

According to the Corriere dello Sport, Barcelona are set to launch a fresh transfer bid in the region of €20m to €25m for Juventus hitman David Trezeguet.

Trezeguet has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona over the past couple of months, and new Coach Josep Guardiola is said to be desperate to sign the prolific marksman.

In the last few weeks the 30-year-old’s name has not been associated so strongly with the Bluagrana as it had been earlier in the summer, however this has changed in recent days.

It is believed that Guardiola has resurrected his ambitions to sign Trezeguet, and indeed the Corriere dello Sport today claims that he is ready to table an offer of €20m to €25m.

Juve have always stated that the prolific marksman, who arrived in Turin from Monaco in 2000, would be staying but their resolve will surely be put to the test should they receive such an offer.

With Trezeguet set to turn 31 later this year, and with a host of top class strikers already at the club, such as Del Piero, Amauri, Iaquinta and Giovinco, Juve may decide that the money is too good to turn down.

If Trezegol were to sign for Barca, he would hook up with old Monaco pal, and good friend Thierry Henry.

Ex-Juve Star Tudor Retires

Ex-Juve Star Tudor Retires

Former Juventus and Croatia defender Igor Tudor has retried from football at the age of just 30 due to injury.

The giant Hajduk Split centre back was once regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young defenders back in the late 1990s, however his career has been plagued by injuries, and at the age of just 30 he has finally decided to call it a day.

Tudor began his career with Hajduk, and attracted the interest of a host of European giants, eventually earning a move to Juventus in 1998.

The Croatian showed early promise in Turin, and was a constant danger off set-pieces with his head, scoring 15 goals for Juve in 115 appearances.

However, he suffered from chronic injury problems, particularly to his ankle, which gradually slowed him down, and in 2005/06 he was loaned out to Siena.

The injuries continued and Tudor almost retired in 2007, but eventually decided to return to Hajduk, thus ending a nine-year association with Juventus.

In October 2007 he played his first game for 16 months, but his troublesome ankle injury just would not disappear, and he has now finally decided that enough is enough.

Tudor also won 55 caps for Croatia between 1997 and 2006, playing in two World Cups and a European Championships.

Ranieri: Fitness The Most Important Thing

Ranieri: Fitness The Most Important Thing

Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri was content with the friendly win over Brondby last night, but says that improving fitness is the most important thing at this stage of pre-season.

The Bianconeri began their pre-season earlier than most other Italian clubs due to their participation in the Champions League preliminaries next month.

During their latest friendly last night, Juve defeated Brondby 2-1 courtesy of goals from Amauri and Vincenzo Iaquinta.

“It's nice to win and it boosts morale,” The Tinkerman told Juventus Channel.

“At this stage it's important to accumulate minutes on the pitch and finding our rhythm; we were facing fitter opponents, they've already begun their League and the UEFA Cup.

“The lads loosened up after a few minutes and they did well. I already noted some positive things; they'll need to be confirmed in the next few games.”

Juventus’ next test is against Borussia Dortmund in Germany on Saturday, and Ranieri confirmed that he plans to use both Alex Del Piero and Mauro Camoranesi.

“I count on making Camoranesi and Del Piero play for a few minutes on Saturday, against Borussia Dortmund, who played the German Super Cup final today,” the former Chelsea manager concluded.

Brondby vs Juventus : 1-2

Friendlies: Juve conquer Denmark

Amauri and Vincenzo Iaquinta secured Juventus’ prestigious 2-1 European friendly victory away to Brondby.

The Turin giants are embarking on a tour of the continent to prepare for the Champions League preliminary round.

Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Momo Sissoko all made their seasonal debuts.

Amauri combined well with Iaquinta and the Brazilian broke the deadlock with a splendid header.

Just before half-time the 2006 World Cup winner also got on the scoresheet at the end of a solo effort to give Juventus a 2-0 lead in Denmark.

Coach Claudio Ranieri immediately introduced Zdenek Grygera, David Trezeguet and youth product Fausto Rossi for the second half.

The Frenchman was fielded as a lone striker supported by Pavel Nedved, Hasan Salihamidzic and Rossi in a new tactical experiment.

Brondby were fitter, though, and it showed in the long run, as with time they began to cause serious problems.

Katongo’s header thumped the crossbar and Williams struck the upright, while the Danes did get one back through Farnerud’s penalty.

Trezeguet could have made it 3-1, but his goal was ruled out by the offside flag.

The next friendly test is on Saturday with Germans Borussia Dortmund.

Juventus: Buffon (Chimenti); Zebina (Grygera), Legrottaglie (Chiellini), Mellberg (Ariaudo), Molinaro; Salihamidzic, Zanetti, Ekdal (Sissoko), Nedved (Esposito); Iaquinta (Trezeguet), Amauri (Rossi)

De Ceglie, Marchisio and Giovinco shine as Olympic team draw

The Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics are getting nearer and footballers are among the athletes preparing themselves for the event. The team coached by Casiraghi and Zola has a large quota of Juventus players and the lads are putting the finishing touches to their pre-tournament training.

After the training camp in Coverciano, the 18-man squad for the tournament was named, and our very own Paolo De Ceglie, Claudio Marchisio and Sebastian Giovinco all made the final list.

The three lads starred in the last friendly played before flying to China too. The team drew 1-1 with Rumania in Pistoia. Giovinco was one of the best men on the pitch, De Ceglie hit the crossbar near the end and Marchisio contributed his usual accurate passing game in midfield.

At the Games, Italy have been drawn in Group D alongside Honduras, South Korea and Cameroon. They will make their debut on August 7th against Honduras; they will then face the Asian team on the 10th and the African side on the 13th. The group winners qualify directly for the semi-finals, ready to challenge for one of the medals.

Genoa bring in Olivera

Genoa bring in Olivera
Tuesday 22 July, 2008

Genoa have practically agreed a deal for Penarol and former Juventus midfielder Ruben Olivera, announced the club.

“The player is due in Italy in the next few hours with his manager and should meet with the directors to verify the possibility of signing for the Grifone,” confirmed the Genoa website.

“In case of a positive outcome, Olivera would transfer to Austria on Wednesday or Thursday morning to join his new teammates in pre-season training.

“There is a certain optimism among the Rossoblu for a happy conclusion to this operation.”

It would not be Olivera's first experience in Serie A, as the 25-year-old Trequartista joined Juventus in 2003 with four goals in 39 appearances.

He had loan spells at Atletico Madrid and Sampdoria before going to Penarol for the last six months.

The Uruguayan has rediscovered his form here and scored five goals in 14 games, though he is still technically owned by Juve.

Giovinco Is Untouchable – Agent

Giovinco Is Untouchable – Agent

The agent of Juventus starlet Sebastian Giovinco is confident that there will be no problems over a new contract, and says that his client is not for sale at any price.

The immensely talented Giovinco is regarded by many as the future of Juventus, and the eventual heir to Alessandro Del Piero. However, recently there have been a number of transfer rumours flying about that has worried supporters.

The 21-year-old fantasista is currently involved in negotiations over a new contract at the Stadio Olimpico, but it has been reported that a few problems have begun to emerge between player and club.

Giovinco is demanding an improved deal, but so far Juve are only willing to pay the attacking midfielder €500,000 extra per year. The stalemate has led to various reports that English trio Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are ready to pounce, and indeed only this morning Tuttosport claimed that Gunners manager Arsene Wenger was already laying the foundations for a transfer bid next summer.

"Giovinco is ready to put himself to the test at Juventus,” Andrea D'Amico told Radio Kiss Kiss, when asked about some of these rumours.

“He will work with great humility to try to achieve his objectives, and without doubt he can be considered as a heritage of Juventus. Therefore he is untouchable.

“With regards to the contract, I am convinced that there will be no problem."

Giovinco spent last season on loan at Empoli, scoring six goals in 35 Serie A appearances.

Wenger Lines Up Giovinco & Marchisio

According to Tuttosport, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been blown away by the ability of Sebastian Giovinco, and is ready to table a bid for him and fellow Juventus starlet Claudio Marchisio.

Giovinco is widely regarded as one of the most explosive young talents in Europe currently, and he is being tipped by many experts to be a superstar in the near future.

The 21-year-old, who is back at Juve after spending last season on loan at Empoli, has hit the news recently due to problems regarding the renewal of his contract.

This led to reports last week that English trio Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool were all ready to take advantage of this confusion and bring the young prodigy to the Premiership.

Tuttosport today claims that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, well known for having an eye for young prospects, is a huge fan of Giovinco, and is already doing the ground work ahead of a transfer bid next summer.

Wenger will travel to next month’s Olympic Games specifically to watch Giovinco, and Italy Under-21 team-mate Claudio Marchisio, also of Juventus.

It has further been reported that Juventus are prepared to accept an offer for the two players, providing Robin Van Persie is included in part exchange. The Dutchman was linked with a transfer to Turin at the weekend, and is hugely admired by the current Juve management team.

Barcelona Still Want Trezeguet - Report

Barcelona Still Want Trezeguet - Report

According to Spanish daily Sport, Josep Guardiola wants David Trezeguet in his Blaugrana team.

After selling some top players including Ronaldinho, Deco, and Zambrotta, the Camp Nou side are looking to bring Trezeguet to La Liga.

The French player enjoyed a great season with the Bianconeri and he scored 20 goals, helping the Old Lady to a surprising third position in Serie A.

The arrival of Amauri has lead to speculation that the number 17’s days at the Olimpico are numbered because Ranieri may prefer the Italian-Brazilian player to the French striker.

Trezeguet has been followed by the Spanish team for quite some time and last month the Camp Nou side had a €25 million offer rejected.

The player has always claimed that he wants to finish his career with the Old lady and win something important with the club he has played for since 2000.

Now with the right offer from the Blaugrana, the Bianconeri could be tempted to sale the player, even though it would be very difficult to find a replacement who can score 15-20 goals a season

Guardiola is trying to form the attacking partnership which made France successful over the years by reforming the duo Tregeuet - Thierry Henry who had both played together at Monaco.

Camoranesi: «Qualifying for the Champions League is our first objective»

Camoranesi: «Qualifying for the Champions League is our first objective»

«We have the chance to get closure on a path we began two years ago. They've been peculiar seasons: in the first we had to return to Serie A, in the second we had to qualify for Europe. Now we need to take a further step and go through the preliminaries; qualifying for the Champions League proper would be the crowning achievement of this path». Mauro German Camoranesi nails the first objective of the season.

Before talking about winning the Scudetto and the Champions League, you have to get into the main European tournament, and then you can concentrate on new targets, knowing full well that the team is capable of fighting on every front: «Juventus are competitive. We have the skills in midfield. I think the other teams know they'll be facing the usual Juve, ready to fight to win something important. In the big teams it's important to have at least two players for each role, because it allows them to rest when necessary, and we have them. International-level players have joined us, and that's what Juventus needed».

Blanc: We Could Sign Stankovic

Blanc: We Could Sign Stankovic

Juventus managing director Jean-Claude Blanc could perform a transfer u-turn after admitting that the club may sign Inter’s Dejan Stankovic.

Blanc announced last week that the Bianconeri would be buying no more outfield players this summer, having completed the capture of Sevilla midfielder Christian Poulsen.

Despite this announcement the Italian press has continued to link Juve with a number of players, and there have been reports that Inter’s Dejan Stankovic could arrive in Turin, possibly on loan.

"I think the team is closed," said Blanc.

"But if there was a chance, then Stankovic could play behind the strikers, in a midfield diamond, or act as cover for Pavel Nedved."

Prior to signing Poulsen, Juventus had been involved in advanced negotiations for Stankovic, and it was even erroneously reported at one stage that the transfer had all but been completed.

Juve supporters are heavily against the signing of Stankovic, and indeed launched a campaign against his transfer about a month ago. The player himself is not thought to be in new Inter boss Jose Mourinho’s first team plans.

Giovinco: Am I Scared? No Way!

Juventus starlet Sebastian Giovinco has revealed that he is not at all scared by the competition he faces at the club this season, despite the presence of the likes of Alex Del Piero, David Trezeguet, Amauri and Vincenzo Iaquinta.

The 21-year-old Giovinco is one of the most exciting talents to have come out of Italy in recent times, and many experts believe he is a superstar in the making.

The fantasista, who grew up in the Juve youth team, spent last season on loan at Empoli, but he has now returned to Turin for the new campaign.

Some people have expressed fear that, with the likes of Del Piero, Trezeguet, Amauri and Iaquinta about, Giovinco may find it hard to break into the team, but the ‘Atomic Ant’ is not all flustered.

“It will be a pleasure to play alongside so many champions,” he declared.

“I am sure I’ll be able to earn my space throughout the campaign. I’m not scared of competition.”

Giovinco is currently preparing for next month’s Olympic games with the Italy Under-21 team. The youngster is being tipped to be one of the stars in Beijing, and he will be hoping to have the same impact as he did when he helped lead the Azzurrini to the Toulon Tournament trophy in May, being named Player of the Tournament in the process.

Juventus train in Chiusa Pesio with Chimenti

Juventus had a good training session in Chiusa Pesio, in front of approximately 5,000 enthusiastic people.

The team were thunderously cheered when they came on and immediately showcased their latest signing: indeed Antonio Chimenti was part of the squad today.
His loan from Udinese should be announced officially in the next few days, but the Clubs reached an agreement in order to let him already train with his new team mates.

After warming up, the team carried out some individual technique exercises, and then played a training match. Christian Poulsen didn't take part in the game; the Danish player had had a rather intense training session already this morning, so he only ran a few laps as scheduled and then rested because of mild muscle fatigue.

The match was entertaining, and Amauri scored the winning goal from a great Alessandro Del Piero pass; he then left the pitch to rapturous applause from the Chiusa Pesio crowd.

I spent my first day at Juventus right here and after only one year I am now the Youth Team Coach. This is a very prestigious appointment and it won't be easy to follow in Chiarenza's footsteps, as he's done very well in recent years, but I'll try, with a lot of commitment and enthusiasm».

Trezeguet Wants Barça Move

Trezeguet Wants Barça Move

News daily Marca reports that David Trezeguet is seriously considering a move to Camp Nou.

The former France international has been on the radar of Barcelona for much of the summer and is a serious candidate to replace Samuel Eto'o in the squad.

Barcelona's prime target is said to be Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor but their attempts to sign the Togolese have so far had no encouragement from the Gunners, who are reluctant to lower their asking price.

On the tenth anniversary of France's World Cup trophy, Trezeguet allegedly told Thierry Henry that joining Barça was a strong possibility after initial contacts with the club, having asked the former Arsenal star about life in Catalonia.

Trezeguet would thus fill the foid that will be left by the departure of Eto'o, who had a meeting today with Txiki Begiristain and Josep Guardiola in the club's dressing room.

The Cameroonian was reportedly asked about the offers he has received and was once again told he is surplus to requirements at Camp Nou. It is believed that both Arsenal and Inter Milan are interested in the player but have yet to launch a formal bid.

It is still unknown whether Eto'o will travel with the rest of the squad on Monday to Scotland for their pre-season tour.

Buffon sees super Juve

Buffon sees super Juve

Gianluigi Buffon is confident Juventus will challenge all the way for the Champions League and Scudetto.

A full two years after the Calciopoli scandal and their demotion to Serie B, the Bianconeri are back in the thick of the action.

“I am convinced we’ll battle for the Champions League and the Serie A title, as these are objectives Juventus have always gone for,” said the goalkeeper.

“It is going to be a long and very intense year, so we have to start preparing for it as best we can right from now, with the Champions League preliminary round.”

The fans have protested against what they see as a substandard transfer campaign, as Christian Poulsen, Olof Mellberg, Dario Knezevic and Amauri have not convinced everyone.

“The grit and willingness to fight for ambitious objectives have always been present, even if in the last few months we weren’t quite on a par with some of our opponents,” mused Buffon.

“Now we have reinforced the squad and because of that have absolutely no excuse to be anything less than 100 per cent convinced of our potential.

“That is a quality that has always stood by Juventus and we should always hold it dear.”

General manager Jean-Claude Blanc confirmed that Juve will only be signing one more player this season, a second choice goalkeeper to act as Buffon’s understudy.

The latest names circulating are Antonio Chimenti and Siena’s Alex Manninger.

Secco Banned From Transfers!

Secco Banned From Transfers!

It is the news that will surely delight Juventini, but disappoint all the fans of other clubs – Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco has been banned by the Calcio Federation from making any transfers for a month.

The much-maligned Secco is not the most popular figure among Juve supporters following a long line of blunders in the transfer market since replacing Luciano Moggi two years ago.

The chief has become notorious for his expensive purchases of the likes of Jean-Alain Boumsong, Sergio Almiron and Tiago Mendes, who joined the club for a total fee of around €27m. He has also been criticized for attempting to offload Giorgio Chiellini last summer to Manchester City.

However, Secco will not be able to immerse himself in any more catastrophic transfers for a while after receiving a one month ban from the Disciplinary Commission of the Federcalcio.

The punishment was handed out for an offence Secco committed, along with former Juve Vice President Roberto Bettega, in negotiations with Genoa over young defender Domenico Criscito.

Genoa President Enrico Preziosi has received a two month suspension, while Giambattista Pastorello and Alessandro Zarbano, vice-chairman and managing director respectively of the Rossoblu have been banned for 15 days. Juve have also received a €10k fine, €15k for Genoa.

It is unlikely that the news of Secco’s suspension will disappoint too many Juve fans, although it may have come about too late to make any difference this summer, as the Bianconeri have already announced that they will be buying no more outfield players before the transfer window closes.
