Diego must be protected, says Blanc

Diego must be protected, says Blanc

Juventus President Jean-Claude Blanc has asked referees to 'protect' Diego from being fouled out of games.

The 24-year-old's performances have come under scrutiny of late as he has failed to scale the heights he reached in his first two games in Serie A.

Some pundits claim Diego is still adapting to the Italian game and that fitness problems haven't helped, but Blanc has an alternative explanation.

“He was fouled 10 times in the game with Maccabi Haifa. That must not be allowed. They must do something about it,” Blanc told Tuttosport.

“A player like him must be protected as he guarantees to entertain the fans. He has been ill-treated in one too many games and can't express his best football.

“He can't be fouled so often and the officials must protect him more.”

Juventus director of sport Alessio Secco, the man who brought Diego to Italy in the summer, is also fully behind his President.

“I get the feeling that certain sides, like Maccabi on Tuesday night, set about to foul him scientifically,” Secco explained.

“First he is felled by one player, then by another and then by another one. This way they escape the yellow cards that should deter such behaviour.

“All No. 10s should get more protection,” Secco concluded.
