Player Talk : Buffon

Buffon’s injury lingers
Friday 1 February, 2008

Juventus will be without Gigi Buffon for this weekend’s game against Cagliari, but new boy Mohamed Sissoko is set to make his debut.

These are frustrating times for Buffon as a back complaint is preventing him from taking his place between the posts.

While the problem isn’t believed to be serious, the only way it can heal is with complete rest and physiotherapy.

Understudy Emanuele Belardi hasn’t been entirely convincing, but he will hold on to the gloves for at least one more game with Buffon planning to return against Udinese on February 10.

“There are signs of improvement regarding Gigi’s back pain,” a Bianconeri medical bulletin read.

“The medical team expect several more days of intense physiotherapy. He should restart training at the beginning of next week, so Buffon won’t be selected this weekend but should be back for the trip to Udine.”

However, Claudio Ranieri can console himself with the fact that new midfield acquisition Sissoko is available for immediate selection after Mali fell at the first hurdle in the African Cup of Nations.

The former Valencia man joined Juve from Liverpool last week and could beat Antonio Nocerino to claim a place against the Sardinians.

Fellow newcomer Guglielmo Stendardo will have to watch from the stands this weekend as he has a suspension to serve, handing the starting spot to Czech stopper Zdenek Grygera.
