Ranieri's bitter Coppa aftertaste
Wednesday 16 January, 2008
Claudio Ranieri wasn’t totally satisfied with Juventus’ Coppa Italia win over Empoli as Giorgio Chiellini is injured and Tiago Mendes disappointed.
The Cadetti champions rallied heroically to claim a 5-3 victory and book a place in the quarter-finals, but the triumph was marred slightly by a serious knee injury to stopper Chiellini.
“We started well, but the sudden injury to Chiellini took the wind out of our sails for a bit,” Ranieri explained. “If everything goes well, we will only be without Giorgio for a month.
“In defence we made lots of mistakes and I will be showing the video to my players.”
Ranieri will be hoping Nicola Legrottaglie can recover from ‘flu’ to start alongside Zdenek Grygera in defence when Sampdoria visit the Stadio Olimpico this weekend.
The Bianconeri tactician also seems to have lost patience with underachieving midfielder Tiago after the Portuguese flop’s umpteenth poor showing.
“I wasn’t happy with Tiago as I expected more from him,” Ranieri raged. “I took him off because he was playing badly.
“Often he chose to play backwards instead of going forward and he performed without personality.”
