Gigi Saved Pinalti!!!!!
Buffon grateful for Romania point
Friday 13 June, 2008
Gianluigi Buffon was the hero and maintains Italy should “celebrate” their point against Romania rather than rue missed chances.
“The performance was there, we deserved more than a draw, but at the end of the day we could’ve been going home a round early,” pointed out the goalkeeper.
A defeat would have eliminated the World Cup holders from Euro 2008, but Buffon saved Adrian Mutu’s late penalty to keep the 1-1 draw safe.
“Considering we were about to be knocked out, we should celebrate this point.”
With Holland beating France tonight, qualification is out of Italy’s hands. If Romania beat the Dutch, then it doesn’t matter what the result is between the 2006 World Cup Finalists.
“I can see quite a few analogies to Euro 2004 and the match with Sweden, but this time we hope the final outcome is different.”
In that tournament the Azzurri went out in the first round in controversial fashion.
They dominated play against the Swedes, but could only manage a 1-1 draw thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s stunning backheel flick.
The draws meant Italy were eliminated without losing a game, as in the other group match Sweden and Denmark drew 2-2 – the only result that would guarantee both Scandinavian teams qualified.
