Del Piero jumps for joy

Del Piero jumps for joy

Wednesday 17 September, 2008

Alessandro Del Piero explains why he was so happy to score in the Champions League, he did a somersault.

“Every now and then I do some acrobatics in training… I am in good shape, that is true, and last year I was able to play three games in a week without problems.

“I was just letting out the tension of the moment after everything we’ve all been through.”

The Juventus captain’s spectacular free kick under the bar sealed a 1-0 victory over Zenit in their Euro comeback two years after the Calciopoli scandal.

“I am happy with a good performance and a fine goal. I was not all that focused on the goalkeeper, he just made a little movement towards the right and I went for it.

“It is only the start and Zenit proved tonight they are a very strong side, so it was tough. We were nervous as it was our home debut, but one must always know how to react to difficulties and that is what we did.”

Del Piero and David Trezeguet started this match, but were rested for the 1-0 win over Udinese at the weekend and are likely to be given a break again.

“The important thing for me is to be on form. We have four strong strikers and the Coach has every right to make his decisions, so I’m hardly annoyed at being on the bench once every seven or eight games,” he grinned.
