Nedved: It felt like our first time...
Wednesday 17 September, 2008

Pavel Nedved thinks nerves got the better of Juventus as they returned to the Champions League. “We felt like debutants.”

The Bianconeri have been out of Europe for two years since the Calciopoli scandal and some stars – including the 2003 Ballon d’Or winner – stayed with the club even in Serie B.

“This was more than a simple victory, as we cared a great deal about this game. Perhaps too much, as we were tense and have played better in other matches,” he said after the 1-0 win over Zenit.

“The three points were crucial and we paid a little for the fact that we may not be Champions League debutants, but we felt like it tonight.

“I felt it and I saw some of my teammates who were very tense in the first half. They couldn’t express themselves as well as usual.”

Alessandro Del Piero scored the only goal of the night in Turin with a splendid free kick that caught the goalkeeper off guard.

“Zenit are a great side and pushed us, but we defended in an organised manner. I think we are in decent shape physically and proved that in the preliminary round. I think it was psychological tonight, as we were too eager to do well and got nervous.”

Nedved does not disguise he has a particular point to prove in this competition, as he has never won and missed the 2003 Final against Milan through suspension.

“I would make many sacrifices to go all the way in the Champions League, as this is a very special competition for me.

“We will have to wait for other games to play better football, as we needed the result tonight and are happy with it. We know we have to improve, but there is plenty of time for that.”

Juve were also hindered by losing Mauro Camoranesi – who hit the post in the first half – to an ankle injury early on.

“I hope he won’t be out for a long time, as he is crucial for our team, especially now that he is in such great form.”
