Transfer Talk : Christian Poulsen
Juve Eye Up Totti’s ‘Best Friend’ Poulsen
Juventus are preparing a bid for controversial Sevilla midfielder Christian Poulsen, according to the Italian press.
Danish midfielder Poulsen is much disliked in the Italian peninsula following his controversial coming-together with Francesco Totti at Euro 2004.
Totti was banned until the semi-finals after reacting to provocation from Poulsen by infamously spitting at the player.
During a Champions League game for Schalke the following year, the 27-year-old was described as a “coward” by Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti after dishing out some rough off-the-ball treatment to Kaka during a game. This led to Gennaro Gattuso confronting Poulsen after the return match at San Siro and gloating in his face following the 3-2 win.
Despite his controversial history, the Italian media is speculating that Juventus are preparing a bid to sign the 28-year-old.
Poulsen has a release clause of €10m, but with just a single year left on his contract, Sevilla may be prepared to listen to lower offers in order to avoid losing him for nothing in 2009.
Poulsen, who arrived at Sevilla on a Bosman deal from Schalke 04 in 2006, was also partly responsible for causing the abandonment of the Sweden-Denmark Euro 2008 qualifier last year.
The schemer punched Swedish striker Marcus Rosenberg in the stomach inside the Danish penalty area. The referee awarded a penalty, leading to a Danish supporter invading the pitch, and attempting to attack the referee. The game was abandoned, and Sweden were handed a 3-0 win.
