In the end Claudio Ranieri was proved right. He felt the Bianconeri's eagerness to redeem themselves, especially those who stayed when the Club were relegated to Serie B, would be decisive in the first Champions League match after two years away from the action. Del Piero sealed the win and showed all of Europe that Juve are back and they mean business. But the defenders – especially Buffon and Chiellini – were also integral in the win.

Buffon: «At first we were a bit shy, we felt the moment as it was like a new debut for us after some time. In matches like this it's important not to concede a goal, because with the great players we have up front, we can always score one ourselves. This win has a special meaning; we'd been waiting for it for a long time, and so did our fans».

Chiellini: «It wasn't easy. We were facing a team that showed how great they are in the Super Cup Final against Manchester United. They have some impressive players, especially up front; they can always create chances to score. We did well in keeping them in check, and then Del Piero did the rest, giving us an important win».
