Del Piero: I May End My Career Abroad

Alessandro Del Piero has confirmed that Juventus will be his last Italian club, but he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of playing abroad before he retires.

Del Piero is one of Juve’s all-time greats, having made more appearances and scored more goals than any other player in the club’s history.

The 33-year-old is worshiped by Juventini around the globe, but there were serious fears that he may leave the club this time last year due to problems over the renewal of his contract.

Sporting director Alessio Secco and the hierarchy refused to offer him the salary he was asking for, but in the end Del Piero agreed to substantially lower his demands due to his love for the club.

“If I had just been thinking about money I wouldn't have signed the contract renewal,” the ‘Golden Boy’ Sportsweek.

“I did consider leaving Juve on a couple of occasions but these temptations didn't last long. But this will be my final team, at least in Italy.”

Del Piero was a prodigious talent as a youngster, and in 1998 was considered along with Ronaldo, to be possibly the best player in the world.

However, a horrific injury against Udinese that year almost ended the forward’s career, and some believe he has never really been the same player since.

“The worst moment of my career was when I was injured in Udine in October 1998,” he admitted.

“However, the death of my father and his battle against illness reminded me that in life there are tough situations, much tougher than football.”

Del Piero played for Italy on Wednesday night against Georgia on the same Udine pitch that he suffered that injury, while this Sunday Juventus take on Udinese in Turin in week two of Serie A.
