Chiellini: We Beat A Great Team
Giorgio Chiellini has knocked back criticism of Juventus’ display against Zenit St Petersburg last night and has reminded everyone that they have just beaten a great team.
The Bianconeri finally made their return to Europe’s premier club competition last night after a two year absence, and they kicked off the Group H proceedings with a home tie against Zenit.
Claudio Ranieri’s men produced a far from vintage performance, but they still managed to grind out a 1-0 win courtesy of a stunning 75th minute free kick from captain Alessandro Del Piero.
There has been some criticism of Juve’s display, but Chiellini, who was a rock at the back, marking Pavel Pogrebnyak out of the game, has reminded everyone that Zenit are a great team and only a few weeks ago beat European Champions Manchester United.
“It wasn't easy,” said Chiellini.
“We were facing a team that showed how great they are in the Super Cup Final against Manchester United.
“They have some impressive players, especially up front; they can always create chances to score.
“We did well in keeping them in check, and then Del Piero did the rest, giving us an important win.”
In the other game in Group H last night, Real Madrid defeated BATE 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
