Chiellini: We have power and grace

Giorgio Chiellini hopes the Azzurri have found the right balance between physical strength and quality.
“We conceded two goals from set plays and that was a real shame,” he said after the 2-2 draw in Dublin last night.
“I think we played one of our best away games of the season, but the important thing was to ensure qualification.”
That result qualified Italy for the 2010 World Cup and guaranteed the top spot in Group Eight.
Alberto Gilardino needed the 89th-minute equaliser after the Republican of Ireland had gone 2-1 up.
“It would’ve been a terrible blow to lose a game we practically dominated,” continued the Juventus defender.
“I think we held out well in the physical battle and had players of a quality above like [Andrea] Pirlo who can always make the difference.”
The Azzurri seem to have struck a balance with the new tactic employed in the last couple of qualifiers.
In Dublin and the 2-0 victory over Bulgaria, Pirlo was returned to his early career role behind the strikers rather than as a deep-lying midfielder.
This allows the Milan star to be closer to the thick of the attacking action and also less likely to be dispossessed for a dangerous counter.
