Italy: Marchisio sent home

Claudio Marchisio has left the Italy camp and now Juventus “must decide whether to go ahead with surgery” on his knee.
The midfielder showed problems when he arrived at the Coverciano training ground on Monday and was diagnosed with a meniscus condition.
He had hoped to recover in time for the World Cup qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Cyprus, but has now been ruled out.
“The player cannot be played for next Wednesday either, so tomorrow he will return to Turin and continue the treatment he started here,” explained Azzurri chief medic Enrico Castellacci.
“It will then be up to the Juventus colleagues. They must decide whether to go ahead with surgery.”
There are fears the damage to the meniscus ligament is more serious than a mere strain, but the only real way to be sure is keyhole surgery.
It is not yet clear whether Marcello Lippi will call up a replacement for the two crunch matches.
