Benitez: Juve’s Alonso Bid Not Good Enough

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has explained why the transfer of Xabi Alonso to Juventus has broken down...

The Bianconeri are desperate to sign a top quality centre midfielder, and have been in negotiations with Liverpool for Alonso for quite some time now.

However the proposed move has hit a snag as both clubs cannot agree a transfer fee, and Benitez says that Alonso will stay at Anfield unless Juventus table a better offer.

"The situation with Alonso has not changed," said Benitez.

"Juventus made an offer that was not good enough and now we are just waiting. I do not know, really, whether that will go through.

"Xabi wants to stay because he is happy here, but he also knows that Juventus is a top side.

"I have talked to him, he knows my ideas and he knows why. So we will try to find a solution for him, for us, and the best for the club."

There have been reports in the Italian media today that Juve have now decided to drop their interest in Alonso, in order to sign Sevilla’s Christian Poulsen instead.
