Del Piero Stellar In Champions League

Del Piero Stellar In Champions League

Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero has been one of the stars of this season's Champions League campaign so far, as he continues to score in Europe's elite club competition.

Early goals in either half from Alessandro Del Piero and new signing Amauri sent Juventus to the top of UEFA Champions League Group H. They have put a difficult spell behind them with the impressive win against Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico in Turin.

A stunning Del Piero shot from open play put the hosts ahead early in the game after good team work from Amauri. The veteran Italian international finsied with a great curving shot which left Iker Casillas with no chance.

The Merengues went further behind in the second half when a header from Amauri deflected off Gabriel Heinze and into the back of the net. Real Madrid were able to pull one back through a header from Ruud van Nistlerooy, but it would prove to be nothing more than a consolation as Juve held on to make it seven points in three matches, one more than their opponents.

Del Piero was once again the driving force behind the win and, along with Pavel Nedved, the 33-year-old put the younger Real Madrid players to shame. The clinical finishing evident in his opening goal was a wonder to behold.

It seems that the Juventus captain saves an extra gear for the midweek European matches. With two goals in the competition already, including the winner against Zenit Saint Petersburg, the Italian international could inspire his team to progress far in the tournament this year.
