Schwarzer: Why I snubbed Juve

Australian international goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has explained that the shadow of Gigi Buffon persuaded him not to join Juventus.

Schwarzer turned down Bayern Munich and Juve in order to sign for Premier League minnows Fulham after rejecting a contract extension at Middlesbrough.

While the 35-year-old was flattered by interest from the Old Lady, he didn’t want to warn the bench as an understudy to Azzurri No 1 Buffon.

“There were offers on the table, but the only thing that mattered to me was regular first-team football,” Schwarzer told Sky Sports News.

“You don’t have to be Einstein to work out that at Juventus with Buffon there it is very unlikely that you will play many games because he is such a world-class ‘keeper.

“I want to qualify for the next World Cup and hopefully be part of that, so I had to go somewhere I would be considered as first choice.”

Many believe that Juve’s search for a reserve to Buffon will lead them to Sunderland shot-stopper Thomas Sorensen,

However, this term’s substitute Emanuele Belardi has insisted that he is still the man for the job.
