Cobolli says goodbye

Cobolli says goodbye
Wednesday 21 October, 2009

Tonight’s Champions League match between Juventus and Maccabi Haifa will be Giovanni Cobolli Gigli’s last as President of the Turin giants.

The Bianconeri announced the decision that he was stepping down earlier this month.

His designated successor is Juventus director general Jean-Claude Blanc, although that decision has yet to be ratified by the club’s shareholders.

According to Tuttosport, Cobolli Gigli will use this evening’s match to say goodbye to the fans who have been mostly supportive during his three-year tenure.

He took over the club in the turbulent summer of 2006 when the so-called ‘Triad’ was dismissed and Juventus were relegated to Serie B as punishment for their involvement in Calciopoli.

Credited with bringing the club back to life, Cobolli Gigli hands the reins over to Blanc in something of a difficult moment with Juventus without a win in five games in all competitions.

Tonight’s match against Maccabi Haifa is being billed as one of redemption in which the Bianconeri can finally get back to winning ways ahead of Sunday’s trip to Siena.
