Corvino backs Melo's Juve for title

Fiorentina director of sport Pantaleo Corvino says that now Juventus have Felipe Melo they can finally overhaul Inter and win the Scudetto.

Corvino had the foresight to bring Melo to Italy in 2008 and then sold him on at a massive profit to Juventus in the summer.

Asked by Tuttosport to reveal what he had done with the £24m Juventus paid for Melo, Corvino replied: “it has in part been reinvested in the youth sector.

“Melo is a champion with few equals in the world in his role. His problems are a question of quota.”

Asked to explain what he meant, Corvino replied: “Melo has been somewhat reduced by a very tough season with Fiorentina. We played for third place with Milan until the very last game of the championship. Soon afterwards he left for the Confederations Cup. When that finished we sold him to Juve and in the space of a few days he was already in training camp.

“The Brazilian has never stopped, so it's natural that he is a little tired. He just needs to draw breath again for us to see the true Melo.”

Before jetting off on a scouting mission to South America, Corvino gave his opinion on the title race.

“Inter and Juve will fight for the Scudetto until the last week. I have no doubt Melo could well prove decisive,” he concluded.
