Juve pair stick together
Juve pair stick together
Friday 16 May, 2008
Juventus’ deadly duo Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet are both gunning for the Capocannoniere title but have dismissed talk of rivalry.
With just 90 minutes left to play this season, Del Piero and Trezeguet are shoulder to shoulder at the top of the Capocannoniere chart with 19 goals to their names, alongside Genoa’s Marco Borriello.
Trez won the scoring crown back in 2002, although he had to share it with Dario Hubner, but Alex has only ever topped the hitman hierarchy in Serie B.
“I hope that we both finish level at the top,” Del Piero insisted on the Juventus Channel.
“It would be great and the right way to pay tribute to our teammates and the way we play as a team.”
Trez, who spent much of the season alone at the top of the chart, also doesn’t seem motivated by personal glory.
“It doesn’t worry me,” he shrugged. “All three of us want to win it and will try and finish as well as we can, but we are all having excellent campaigns.
“Alex has managed to show to everyone that he is still one of the best players in the world.”
As the duo approach this Saturday’s final game against Sampdoria it is the first time that two teammates have shared pole position in the battle for the scoring title.
The last time two teammates finished the season as top scorers was 1987-88 and the men in question were Diego Maradona and Careca at Napoli.
Next season Juve may have another lethal marksman in Amauri, who is expected to sign from Palermo in the summer.
“He has had a great season and would be useful to lots of teams,” Trezeguet stressed.
“I hope that he comes here because we need his technique and quality.”
As for his targets for next term, the ambitious Trez is setting his sights high.
“I hope that we can deliver the Champions League next season,” he grinned.
“The penalty miss in Manchester against Milan still haunts me. Lots of time has passed and I want revenge.
“Will I go to Euro 2008? I have a bit of a strange relationship with the national side,” he continued.
“I feel very loved in Italy but less so when I am with Les Bleus.
“My only goal is to do well for Juve and to show that I deserve a place in the France team.
“In the end it is down to the Coach – if I am in the squad then I will be very grateful, if not then life goes on.”
