Donadoni To Select Chiellini & Snub Aquilani?
Donadoni To Select Chiellini & Snub Aquilani?
Latest reports emerging from Italy suggest that Italy national team boss Roberto Donadoni will take Giorgio Chiellini to Euro 2008, and leave Alberto Aquilani at home.
Chiellini has had a magnificent season for Juventus, and he also played his part in Italy’s qualification to the Euros, when he came on as a late substitute in the crucial decider with Scotland, winning the free kick that led to Christian Panucci’s winning goal.
Despite this fine form, Chiellini’s place in Donadoni’s squad was believed to be in doubt after he was not selected for last month’s friendly with Spain.
However last weekend the 23-year-old scored twice for Juve in the 5-2 thrashing over Lazio, and his performance is said to have convinced Donadoni to take him to Euro 2008.
Donadoni has decided that he will choose six midfielders. These will be the Milan trio of Massimo Ambrosini, Rino Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo, Roma’s Daniele De Rossi and Simone Perrotta, as well as Juventus’ Mauro Camoranesi, who is likely to play in a more advanced position on the right wing.
Aquilani, who had been expected to be called up, has struggled a little in recent matches. Donadoni believes that Chiellini will add some extra cover in defence, and can also be used as an emergency on the left of midfield, like he did against Scotland.
It is also speculated that Milan’s in-form Pippo Inzaghi, who has hit eight goals in his last four games, is looking a good bet to pip Marco Borriello to the role of understudy for Luca Toni.
