The Bianconeri wasted no time in despatching the Spanish giants as Del Piero gave them the lead on five minutes.
Amauri made the points secure in the second half with a well taken header before Ruud Van Nistelrooy pulled one back for Los Merengues.
Ranieri is delighted with the win and he is full of praise for his captain.
"I am delighted with the result and it's a good result for us," Ranieri told Sky Sports.
"Del Piero? He is fantastic. He always want to be the first, he wants to be the champion, that is great."
The coach then spoke about his position at the club and he is confident of keeping his job.
"The job? Sometimes it's safe sometimes it isn't but everyone knows I am a fighter and I will fight on," concluded the coach.
The Old Lady is now top of the group and is favourite to qualify alongside Real Madrid. The critics are likly to ease off the Tinkerman following the much needed win.
